Bells Beach seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (May - August)

The Southern Ocean switches on during the austral winter, and Bells Beach feels the full force. Average wave heights hold around 1.3m (4ft) while average periods climb to 12.6-13.0 seconds, meaning long-period groundswell pulses are rolling into Bass Strait on a regular basis. At the same time, the local wind regime becomes much more favorable, with ideal offshore conditions registering 52-55% of the time from May through August. Deep low-pressure systems and cold fronts migrate north under the Australian continent during these months, firing consistent SSW/SW groundswell toward the SE-facing bight. With offshore NW-W-N winds grooming the surface, Bells produces the powerful, lined-up, hollow waves that made it famous.

Fair Surf Season (April, September, October)

The shoulder months are where the magic starts and finishes. April sees the first serious jump in average wave period to 12.5 seconds and a big rise in ideal wind consistency to 43%. September is still packing the strongest average swell height of the year at 1.4m (4.6ft) with 13.0-second periods, although the wind is beginning to transition back toward spring conditions and ideal wind drops to 47%. October remains rideable with some solid Southern Ocean pulses, but the 38% ideal wind figure signals a return of more mixed conditions, especially afternoon sea breezes. These months are very capable of delivering classic Bells Beach sessions, but they require a more careful eye on the synoptic setup.

Low Surf Season (November - March)

From late spring through early autumn, the subtropical ridge strengthens and high pressure becomes the dominant player over southeast Australia. Average swell heights ease back to 1.2-1.3m (4ft), and more importantly average wave periods drop to 11.0-11.9 seconds, producing a less organized mix of windswell and weaker groundswell. Ideal offshore wind days fall to just 23-30% of the time as E to ESE to S winds become more frequent, often kicking up onshore chop. January and February are the slowest months of the year, though Bells is never completely flat. When a late-season cold front or a strong Southern Ocean storm sneaks in with a NW offshore wind, there can still be fun, clean 3-5ft (0.9-1.5m) waves. Consistency, not quality, is the issue during the summer doldrums.
