Broken Head seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (April - August)

Broken Head is an east-facing beach in northern New South Wales, so the quality window is defined by a tug-of-war between easterly trade swell and westerly offshore winds. The months from April through August offer the best ratio: ideal wind frequencies climb from 47% in April to 70% in June and July, while average wave periods lengthen to 9.5-9.6s and wave heights sit consistently around 5-6ft (1.5-1.8m). Tasman Sea lows and Southern Ocean frontal systems supply the energy, and the SW-WSW-W-WNW winds groom the surf into clean, powerful lines.

Fair Surf Season (March, September - November)

During the shoulder months, surf direction becomes more of a mixed bag. March still has a heavy E/ESE bias and the first real offshore windows, while September through November see a progressive return of NE/ENE/E swell but a drop in ideal wind frequency from 51% down to 31%. These months can produce great surf when a Tasman low or tropical cyclone lines up, but consistency is lower and sea breezes are more disruptive.

Low Surf Season (December - February)

High summer is the most challenging stretch. The Coral Sea high cranks up the NE to E trades, and although those directions also produce plenty of swell - the optimal quadrant can exceed 60% of the wave energy - they are also the directions that blow directly onshore at the beach. Ideal wind frequency falls to 24-30%, average periods drop to 8.3-8.9s, and tropical moisture brings heavy rainfall. Surf is still rideable, but you have to work hard for clean waves and hunt the early morning windows.
