Cottosloe seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (May - August)

Cottosloe's west-facing shoreline comes alive during the Australian winter when the Indian Ocean storms of the 'Roaring Forties' fire long-period SW and WSW groundswell square into the coast. This is the sweet spot of the year - average wave heights peak between 2.2m and 2.7m (7-9ft), and periods hover around 13 seconds, giving the break serious power. The wind pattern also aligns beautifully: persistent high pressure over the interior pumps offshore ESE/SE breezes, especially in May when ideal wind tops 48 percent. The result is glassy, lined-up waves that make Cottosloe a genuine winter destination.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

The shoulder months of April and September offer a taste of the winter magic, but with less consistency. April still sees 43 percent ideal winds and average swells around 2.0m (6-7ft), while September holds onto bigger 2.6m (8.5ft) swell but is more frequently ruffled by westerly-wind shifts. These are transitional months where you can score epic days if the synoptic pattern plays along, but you'll also pay your dues with more mixed conditions.

Low Surf Season (November - February)

Summer is the sleepy time at Cottosloe. The storm tracks retreat south, average swell heights drop to 1.8-2.0m (6-6.5ft), and periods slide back into the 11-12 second range. Worse, the wind regime turns unfavourable - a strong sea breeze from the SW/S direction builds almost daily, chopping up the surface. Ideal wind drops to just 25-30 percent. There are still fun waves for beginners and longboarders, but this is the time to temper expectations and pick your windows carefully.
