Gas Bay seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (April - September)
April through September is prime time at Gas Bay. The west-southwest facing beach sits directly in the firing line of the Southern Ocean storm track, and once autumn arrives the swell machine switches on. Monthly average wave heights climb from 2.0m (6.5ft) in April to a peak of 2.8m (9.2ft) in July, while swell periods hold in the powerful 12.8-13.3s range. The dominant SSW and SW groundswells are exactly the directions Gas Bay needs. It is not all glory, though; winter also brings a lot of westerly and southwesterly wind, which is onshore here. Ideal northeast offshore flow only arrives about 18-29% of the time. The best days are the classic post-frontal windows when a strong high pressure ridge builds over the Bight, winds go light offshore, and long-period south-west swell lights up the bank.
Fair Surf Season (October - March)
From October through March the Southern Ocean pulses become less frequent, but Gas Bay is never truly flat. Average swell heights still sit around 1.8-2.2m (6-7ft), and periods remain in the long-period 11.8-12.9s bracket. The bigger issue is the wind. As the subtropical high pressure belt moves south, the summer pattern becomes dominated by SSE, SE and S winds, with ideal northeast offshore flow dropping to just 12-20%. This makes the surf more inconsistent and often a bit lumpy, but the windows between sea breezes and during easterly flow can deliver fun, rippable waves.
Low Surf Season (December - February)
The relative low season is December, January and February. Swell sizes settle to their yearly minimum around 1.8-1.9m (6ft), and average periods dip to 11.8-11.9s, so the raw power is lower. Ideal wind percentages bottom out at 12-16%, and the prevailing summer SSE/SE wind regime can put a chop on the surface. It is far from flat - the SSW/SW groundswell machine still produces regular head-high to double-overhead sets - but conditions are the most fickle of the year, so you have to pick your morning windows carefully.
