Jan Juc seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (April - September)
The Southern Ocean switches on with real intent through autumn and winter, giving Jan Juc the best combination of size, power and grooming wind. Average swells lift to 5-6ft (1.5-1.8m) with periods of 12-12.6s, meaning long-period groundswell wrapping into the SSE-facing beach. At the same time, a climatological increase in northerly-to-northwesterly winds pushes the ideal wind occurrence from 39% in April to over 50% in June and July, creating far more clean, offshore mornings. This is the core of the year for Jan Juc.
Fair Surf Season (March and October - November)
These are transitional months. March still gets solid long-period swells in the 5ft (1.5m) range and a 26% ideal wind score, but the sea breeze begins to creep back. October and November see the Southern Ocean still active, with average periods around 11.5-12.2s and plenty of SW/SSW groundswell, yet more mixed winds and the return of afternoon onshores. If you pick the synoptic windows behind cold fronts, you'll find good-to-excellent waves; if you don't, you'll be scratching around in bumpy leftover windswell.
Low Surf Season (December - February)
Summer is Jan Juc's slowest stretch. Average swell heights drop to 5ft (1.5m), periods shorten to 11.1-11.3s, and the percentage of ideal offshore wind plummets to 20-22%. High pressure over the mainland and adjacent ocean sets up a persistent SSE-to-SE afternoon sea breeze, which is directly onshore at the beach. Though the water is warmest at 16.7-19.2°C, the wave quality is at its most inconsistent. Early mornings and the occasional strong SW swell are the saving grace.
