Margaret River seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (April - September)

Margaret River's exposed west-south-west coast is a pure product of the Indian Ocean and the relentless westerly storm track of the Southern Ocean. The most consistent and powerful swell window runs from April through September, when average heights climb from 2.0m (6.6ft) in April to a winter peak of 2.8m (9.2ft) in July. Wave periods sit in the 12.8-13.3s range, meaning long-period, powerful groundswell is the norm. The true quality hinges on wind direction: April and May stand out as the sweet spot, when the subtropical ridge is still close enough to supply a high percentage of E/ESE offshore winds while the ocean is already firing.

Fair Surf Season (October - November)

Spring transition brings a step-down in swell size but a boost in consistency from the SW/WSW quadrant. October still averages a solid 2.2m (7.2ft) with 12.9s periods, and frontal passages can still deliver firing sessions between spells of S/SSE winds. November starts to lose the winter punch, yet the lighter winds and warmer sea air often make for cleaner, more user-friendly conditions at the region's protected breaks.

Low Surf Season (December - March)

Summer sees the Southern Ocean storm machine ease into a lower gear. Average swell heights settle around 1.8-1.9m (5.9-6.2ft) and periods drift back toward 11-12s. The tropical/subtropical easterlies and strong sea-breeze cycle produce persistent SSE/SE winds, with only a modest share of pure offshore E/ESE flow. It's still far from flat though - regular SSW and SW pulses, especially in December and January, keep the main breaks busy, and any late-season long-period W/SW swell with an easterly wind can turn Margaret River into a world-class playground.
