Middleton's geography is its identity: a beach that faces due south into the full, unimpeded fetch of the Great Australian Bight and the Southern Ocean. That exposure only reaches its true potential when the storm tracks of the Roaring Forties align with a north-to-northwest wind blowing offshore. From April through September, the ocean makes that alignment on a near-daily basis. Average wave periods push from 11.9s in March to 12.3-12.4s and hold there for six months, while the ideal offshore wind frequency climbs from 38% in April to a 50% peak in June and July. The swell direction keeps a strong SSW core but gradually takes on more SW and WSW content as winter lows deepen across the Bight, delivering the long, powerful, well-shaped groundswell that Middleton is known for. Water temperatures fall to 13.7°C by August, so you trade comfort for quality - and it is a trade well worth making.
