Pennington Bay seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (April - September)

Pennington Bay hits its stride when the Southern Ocean storm track gets a serious kick through autumn and winter. Low-pressure systems rolling across the Great Australian Bight fire long-period groundswell at Kangaroo Island, with average surf heights lifting to 1.8-2.0m (5.9-6.6ft) and wave periods hovering around 12s. The payoff is just as important on the wind side: post-frontal northwest and north winds become more frequent, which is exactly what this SSE-facing beach needs for clean, offshore surf. Ideal conditions jump to 23-28% of the time from April through September, making this the reliable window for quality waves. Expect more water moving through the bay and a lot more lineup energy as winter lows march across the Bight.

Fair Surf Season (March and October)

These shoulder months are a classic mixed bag. March still holds good late-summer swell at 1.8m (5.9ft) with an 11.7s period, and October is coming out of winter with a still punchy 1.8m average, but the wind consistency is a notch or two worse than the core season. Early morning northerly offshore flows and late clean windows are worth chasing, yet the sea breeze or southwest frontal wind can disrupt sessions. If you time a synoptic setup right, these months can deliver surprisingly fun, groomed waves.

Low Surf Season (November - February)

Summer in southern Australia is the season of the south wind. A persistent high-pressure ridge pushes into the Bight, the sea breeze becomes the default afternoon condition, and the percentage of ideal offshore wind crashes to 9-13%. There is still plenty of Southern Ocean swell in the water - the average sits around 1.7m (5.6ft) - but the dominant SE/SSE airflow is onshore and works against the bay's exposed orientation. Morning sessions before the seabreeze fills in can save the day, but overall the waves are softer, bumpier and more inconsistent than during the winter main event.
