Sandon Point seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (May - August)
Sandon Point springs to life as late autumn and winter settle in over the New South Wales coast. By May, the percentage of ideal surfing winds jumps to 52% and peaks at 58% in July, while average swell periods stretch out to 9.7s. The dominant SSE through SE groundswell sits squarely in the east-facing exposure of the point, and with SW/W/WNW offshore winds becoming the norm, the point breaks crisp and hollow with long walls. This is the core of the season for serious surfers seeking clean, powerful waves.
Fair Surf Season (March - April & September - October)
The shoulder months are true transition periods. March still has a summer flavour, but the ideal-wind frequency rises from 29% to 43% in April as the first winter cold fronts push through from the Southern Ocean. September and October retain plenty of SE/S groundswell and the water begins to warm again, yet onshore NE/SE sea-breezes return more frequently, making dawn patrol the best bet. Average periods of 8.7-9.4s produce fun, rippable waves but less consistent peak performance than winter.
Low Surf Season (November - February)
Australian summer is the slow season at Sandon Point. The swell window is dominated by NE/ENE trade wind swell, with average heights around 1.5-1.7m (4.9-5.6ft) and periods stuck in the 8.3-8.8s range. Onshore NE/SE winds are frequent, and ideal offshore wind occurs only 20-27% of the time. When a NW or W offshore blows against a clean E/NE swell, the point can still deliver fun waves, but there is plenty of lumpy, wind-affected surf between those windows.
