Smiths Beach seasonal overview

Sitting in the shadow of the Indian Ocean's powerful southwest groundswell, Smiths Beach is a study in exposure. This NW-facing stretch needs a combination that the local swell rose does not hand out lightly: long-period waves with a more westerly or northwesterly angle, plus a window of offshore wind from S to WSW. The year splits neatly into three chapters.

Best Surf Season (April - September)

The Southern Ocean winter engine drives average wave heights from 6-7ft (2.0m) in April to a 9ft (2.8m) peak in July, with periods sitting in the 12.8 to 13.3 second range. This is the most powerful and consistent surf of the year at Smiths. The catch is wind: ideal offshore flow runs only 17 to 29 percent of the time, and strong westerly and NW flow can easily spoil the surface. Patience and a keen eye on the post-frontal S/SW clearance are the keys to scoring Smiths at its beating heart.

Fair Surf Season (March, October and November)

These shoulder months trade a little size for a lot of sanity. Average swells sit between 6-7ft (1.9-2.2m), periods are still in the long 12.2 to 12.9 second range, and winds are more often light enough for clean, lined-up conditions. March and October in particular can deliver the best all-round surf of the year, especially when solid WSW groundswell meets a morning S/SW offshore.

Low Surf Season (December - February)

Summer is the quiet period at Smiths. The subtropical high pressure ridge becomes the dominant weather feature, average wave heights drop to around 6ft (1.8-1.9m), and the afternoon SSE sea breeze becomes a daily ritual. It is rarely flat, thanks to lingering SW groundswell, but the quality window is short and often soft. Early mornings are the safest bet, and a distant tropical cyclone in the Indian Ocean occasionally throws a wildcard NW swell into the mix.
