Best Surf Season (February - June)

As the tropical monsoon fades and the subtropical ridge pushes south of the continent, Snapper Rocks enters its most consistent stretch of the year. From February through June the percentage of ideal wind is at its highest, the average swell sits in the 3-4ft (0.9-1.2m) window, and the average period stretches to 8.4-8.9s. This is the sweet spot: clean, punchy Superbank walls groomed by offshore S/SSW/SW flow. April and May are especially reliable, with 61-64% ideal wind and much drier autumn weather.

Fair Surf Season (January, July - August)

January still has summer energy, but the monsoon trough brings more NNW/NE onshore wind and rainfall, dropping the quality despite healthy swell heights. July and August deliver consistent E/SE trade-wind swells and moderate offshore wind, but the average size slips to 3ft (0.9m) and the swell becomes less consistent. These months can be fun between the lumps, especially when Tasman Sea lows fill in the energy.

Low Surf Season (September - December)

Spring and early summer are the fickle months for Snapper. The subtropical ridge drives persistent NNW-NNE winds - the onshore directions for this north-facing beach - and the average period drops to 7.3-7.8s. Swell heights remain around 3-4ft (0.9-1.2m), but the quality is often choppy and messy rather than groomed. A passing cold front or tropical low can still line things up with N/NE swell and S/SW wind, but expect more waiting than scoring during these months.
