Best Surf Season (April - September)

Situated on Australia's northwest coast, Tombstones is a fickle NW-facing break that demands a carefully aligned mix of long-period groundswell and offshore wind. The most consistent quality arrives between April and September, when the Southern Ocean storm track is at its most active. Average wave periods climb from 13.3s in April to a peak of 14.1s in July and August, while average swell heights sit in the 4-5ft (1.3-1.6m) range. The percentage of ideal wind jumps to 28-37%, with S through WSW offshore flows grooming the face. Although true N/NW swell remains rare, long-period SSW/SW groundswell wraps into the NW-facing coast and provides the best surf of the year.

Fair Surf Season (February - March & October - November)

The shoulder months of February and March, and again in October and November, still offer workable conditions, especially when a solid SW or SSW groundswell coincides with a break in the afternoon sea breeze. Periods range from 11.8-13.0s and average heights from 4-5ft (1.3-1.6m), but the ideal wind window drops to 10-21%. These months require a bit more luck and timing, but a late-season cold front or early-autumn low can still produce quality sessions.

Low Surf Season (December - January)

Summer sees the Southern Ocean storm track retreat poleward and the tropical trade regime take over. Average periods fall to 11.0-11.1s and ideal wind days are scarce at only 9-13%. With more onshore summer breeze and less consistent long-period swell, Tombstones becomes a fatter, more irregular version of itself. Still, occasional S/SSW pulses, or a well-tracked tropical cyclone dropping NW swell, can salvage a memorable session.
