July: Mid-Winter Consistency

July holds onto winter's grip. Ideal wind sits at 49 percent, with WSW and W combining for a powerful 32.5 percent of the wind field, and the average swell height remains solid at 6.2ft (1.9m) with a period of 9.6s and solid 4-8ft (1.2-2.4m) sets on the better swells. The wave direction is almost a carbon copy of June-SSE and S together account for 33.9 percent, while the NNE-NE-ENE-E window remains small at 17.8 percent. What July lacks in direct E/NE swell it makes up for in consistency and surface quality. The offshore winds are strong: WSW, W and SW often blowing 20-40kph, which can create clean but challenging conditions at the breakwall. With only 1.89 mm of rain per day, it's one of the driest months, and water temperature falls to its winter low of 18.9°C. Air temp averages 13.6°C, so the south swells still pack plenty of Southern Ocean punch. Keep an eye out for those occasional E/SE pulses that sneak in and light the breakwall up.
