Best Surf Season (May - September)

The Southern Hemisphere winter is the clear winning window at Warroora Station. As low-pressure systems and cold fronts ramp up across the Roaring Forties, average surf heights climb to 1.5-1.7m (5-5.6ft) and mean swell periods push into the 13.7-14.1s range. At the same time, the subtropical ridge shifts north and delivers the most reliable E/ESE/SE/SSE offshore flow of the year, especially in May (34% ideal), June (33%) and July (31%). The result is larger, longer-period SSW/SW groundswell grooming into the NW-facing coastline with much cleaner conditions than summer. One thing to keep in mind: the wave rose is heavily weighted toward SSW/SW energy, even though the beach faces NW. A pure west or northwest swell is the absolute gold standard here - it hits the coast more directly and produces the most lined-up waves.

Fair Surf Season (April & October)

The shoulder months offer real potential but require a little more patience. April has the wind quality with 25% ideal offshore flow and a healthy 13.1s period, but average height is still modest at 1.4m (4.6ft). October is the mirror image - heavy 1.7m (5.6ft) surf and a 12.9s period, but ideal winds drop to 10%, so big days often come with bumpy southerly wind. In both months, the surfer who can pick the windows will find quality, just not on tap every day.

Low Surf Season (November - March)

From late spring through summer, the Indian Ocean storm track weakens and tropical heat takes over. The average swell period drops to 11-12.2s, ideal offshore flow falls to just 8-18%, and the wind rose becomes dominated by fresh to strong S/SSW/SW breezes. The surf is smaller, shorter period and often cruder, with warm air temperatures reaching the mid-to-high 20s (°C) and water temps peaking around 26-27°C. There are still rideable days, especially if a tropical low or cyclone pushes W/NW swell into the coast, but the consistent, high-quality winter groundswell is largely missing.
