Best Surf Season (May - August)

Winter in the South Atlantic blows new life into Ferrugem. Cold fronts tracking from the southwest generate longer-period swell, and the wind stats respond with the biggest jump of the year - ideal surf wind climbs from 55% in April to 66% in May and peaks at 72% in June. Average periods stretch to 9.6s, just shy of true long-period territory, and average heights sit around 4-5ft (1.2-1.5m). The ESE-facing bight still receives most of its energy from the E/ESE/SE window, while the increasing W/NW offshore flow keeps the lineup cleaner. This is the most consistent, punchy and surfable time of the year.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

These are transition months. April sees the first meaningful rise in NW/W offshore winds and a jump in period to 9.0s, but the ocean still has summer's shorter-period feel. September flips the script: average swell height peaks at 5ft (1.5m) and the E/ESE window is fully charged, yet ideal wind drops back to 50% as spring NNE trades return. Both months offer great sessions, but you have to pick your days and chase the mornings.

Low Surf Season (October - March)

From late spring through summer, the South Atlantic High parks over the region and feeds persistent NE/NNE flow. Ideal wind scores fall to 39-47%, average periods shorten to 8.0-8.6s, and most waves are short-period windswell in the 2-5ft (0.5-1.5m) range. The swell direction is still from the E/ESE/SE window that Ferrugem loves, but the energy is mostly locally generated and quickly becomes bumpy under afternoon onshores. Within this stretch, February and March are the slightly better months, because the first autumn cold-front pulses add a touch more period and a few extra clean windows.
