The setting alone is worth the drive—about an hour from Ipanema—but the surf seals the deal. This beach is a reliable performer, soaking up SSW swell and handling waves from 3 to 8 feet with ease. Both lefts and rights peel over a forgiving sandy bottom, making it a welcoming playground for beginners and a solid option for more experienced surfers looking to dial in their turns. Tide windows are generous: low, mid, and high all produce rideable waves, but watch the extremes—very low or very high tide can send the lineup into messy closeouts. The preferred north wind helps groom things out, keeping the surface cleaner. Access involves a pleasant walk through the park, and once you’re in the water, the paddle back is easiest near the right corner. Drift too far toward the middle of the beach, and you’ll earn a workout fighting the waves on the return. During the week, the crowd factor is low, giving you room to roam along the long beach. Weekends, however, bring the crowds and a competitive edge, especially around that right corner—keep your cool and share the stoke. The best consistency rolls in during autumn and winter, when the swell machine fires up more regularly. Best Surf Season (May - August)

Grumari is a place that lives and dies by the South Atlantic storm track. Its SSE-facing beach is wide open to the swell-producing ESE, SE, SSE and S quadrants, while still getting shelter from the messy west/northwest windswell that puts other spots to work. From May through August, the ocean gets properly organised. Average wave heights hold in the 4ft (1.2m) range, periods stretch to 10.8-11.1s, and the share of clean offshore wind from the N, NW, WNW and NNW directions reaches its annual maximum at 47-55%. June is the standout with 55% ideal wind, an 11.1s average period and a healthy mix of S and SSW groundswell that lines up into the bay. The dry autumn and winter airmass, with rainfall dropping below 2.5mm per day, also keeps the surface glassier and the sandbars more settled.
