September: Bigger and Messier

September can look great on paper, but it is one of the trickier months to score Guarita clean. The average swell reaches its annual peak at 1.8m (6ft), but the period backs off to 9.1s and ideal wind drops to just 34%. The swell is heavily weighted in the east: ENE 18.9%, E 15.7%, ESE 13.9%, SE 13.6%, SSE 12%, and S 10.4%, with NE also creeping to 2.6%. This is a powerful mix of trade windswell and late-season S/SSW groundswell, so the ocean is rarely tiny. The problem is the wind. The NE trade is the dominant wind at 20.3%, with ENE 10.6% and NNE 12.1%; combined with the S/SSW/SW sea breeze at about 25%, the window of clean offshore conditions is limited. Early mornings can still be excellent with a NW/NNW land breeze, but by midday the surface often turns lumpy and bumpy. Water temperature warms slightly to 17.1°C, air averages 15.8°C, and rainfall picks up to 4.94mm/day. Hunt the mornings.
