Best Surf Season (April - August)

Itapiruba's southeast-facing beach comes alive during the austral autumn and winter, when the South Atlantic storm track shifts north and extratropical cyclones march off the Argentine and Uruguayan coasts. From April through August, average surf heights build into the 5-6ft (1.6-1.7m) range and average periods stretch to 9.3-9.9s. The statistical sweet spot is obvious: ideal wind windows occur 51 to 61 percent of the time, peaking at 61 percent in June. The swell direction becomes increasingly dominated by SSE, S and SSW energy, which means more organized groundswell wrapping into the coast. This is the time to plan a trip if you want the most consistent, cleanest surf.

Fair Surf Season (March and September - October)

The shoulder months offer a mix of real potential and frustrating variability. March already shows longer average periods (9.0s) and an uptick in ESE and SE energy, but wind consistency is still below 50 percent. September delivers the biggest average swell of the year at around 6-6.5ft (1.9m), yet that is exactly when the trade winds and cross-shore flow strengthen, knocking the ideal-window percentage down to 37 percent. October holds plenty of storm swell but only 34 percent ideal wind. Expect occasional firing days in these months, often followed by a few days of bumped-up, onshore slop.

Low Surf Season (November - February)

During the austral late spring and summer, the South Atlantic High becomes the dominant player and the storm track retreats. Tropical and subtropical easterly trade winds produce a constant supply of short-period, cross-shore windswell, but average periods drop to the 8.3-8.7s range and average heights settle around 4-5ft (1.4-1.6m). Ideal offshore winds are at their annual minimum, with only 33 to 43 percent clean windows. The beach still functions, especially when E-ESE pulses arrive, but conditions are generally groveling and bumpy compared with the autumn and winter months.
