Best Surf Season (May - July)

Laje da Jagua is a SE-facing ledge that comes alive when the South Atlantic starts throwing real groundswell at the Brazilian coastline. The best window is late autumn through early winter, from May through July. Average wave periods climb to 9.4-9.8s, average heights sit in the 5-6ft (1.5-1.8m) range, and the S/SSE/SSW component of the swell spectrum reaches its highest share of the year. Critically, the frequency of N/NW offshore wind days also improves, with 32-37% of the observed winds ranking as ideal for surfing. These are the classic cold-front setups: a low pressure system deepens off Argentina, sends S/SW swell north, and the wind clocks offshore from the NW as the front clears.

Fair Surf Season (March - April / August - September)

The shoulder seasons are a mixed bag. March and April see the first real S groundswells of the year, while periods climb toward 9.1-9.3s and water temps are still pleasant; however, the NE trade winds are still strong enough to mess up many sessions. August and September can be powerful, especially September, which posts the biggest average swell of the year at around 6.5ft (2.0m). But the wind statistics are less forgiving during spring, and ideal conditions drop to just 18-27% of the time. When the trade wind lays down and a S/SW swell fills in, these months can still produce heavy, grinding waves.

Low Surf Season (October - February)

From spring through summer, the South Atlantic Subtropical High tightens its grip and the NE trade winds become the story. October, November and December all sit at or below 20% ideal wind, while the swell spectrum is dominated by short-period ENE/E/ESE windswell with average periods of only 8.4-8.7s. The true S/SW groundswell component shrinks to around 10% or less, leaving Laje da Jagua fat, bumpy and generally less inspiring. January and February are a little better from a wind standpoint - ideal conditions reach 24-27% - but the lack of S/SSW swell and the persistent trade-wind chop keep the surf quality well below the winter standard. If you are after the real Laje da Jagua, book it in the autumn and winter months.
