Praia da Cal is an east-southeast facing stretch of sand that lives and dies by the South Atlantic trade-wind machine. The best months are May through August, when the South Atlantic High expands and cold fronts push farther north, generating a consistent conveyor of mid-period easterly and southeasterly swell. Average surf sits in the 5-6ft (1.5-1.8m) range with wave periods of 9.2-9.8s, and the offshore wind quadrant (W, WNW, NW, NNW) peaks at 50-54% of the time. That combination produces the cleanest, most lined-up waves of the year. Water temps drop to 16-20°C, and the beach sees fewer trade-wind-compromised days.
