Praia da Macumba seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (May - August)
When the South Atlantic winter kicks in, Praia da Macumba shifts into top gear. The combination of longer-period groundswell from S/SSW/SSE and a higher frequency of offshore N/NNW winds creates the most consistent and cleanest surf of the year. Average wave heights climb to 1.2-1.3m (4-4.5ft) and average periods reach 10.8-11.1s, putting the lineup in the powerful long-period category. June and July are the standouts, with ideal wind scores around 56-57% and dry, cool conditions typical of a high-pressure dominated winter.
Fair Surf Season (April & September - October)
The shoulder months deliver real swell but require more patience. April already sees solid S-groundswell and a drier autumn regime, with periods around 10.6s and an average height of 1.2m (4ft). September can still produce similar size, but the trade winds become more aggressive and the ideal wind percentage drops to 41%. October is the trickiest of the fair months: wave heights remain rideable at 1.1m (3.5ft) and periods just over 10s, yet only 37% of the time offers favorable wind, so morning windows are often the only clean option.
Low Surf Season (November - March)
The summer months (December-February) bring the South Atlantic into a more suppressed pattern, with average heights dropping to 0.9-1.0m (3ft) and average periods between 9.6 and 9.9s. The wave energy is dominated by shorter-period SE/SSE windswell and residual S-hemisphere pulses, while the strengthening northeast trade wind regime creates a fair amount of cross-shore and onshore texture. November is the weak link: same low 37% ideal wind as October but smaller swell. Even so, light wind days in January and February can still produce clean, fun-sized waves on the sandbars, but it's far from the region's heavy season.
