Best Surf Season (April - July)

Autumn and early winter deliver the most reliable combination of size, period, and wind at Praia dos Molhes. Swell heights hold in the 5-6ft (1.5-1.8m) range while average wave period climbs to 9.4-9.8 seconds. More importantly, the frequency of ideal offshore wind windows peaks at 50-53% in May and June as cold fronts sweep across southern Brazil. South Atlantic extratropical cyclones generate clean ESE-SE groundswell, while post-frontal W-WNW flow keeps the lineup clean. It is the sweet spot for sandbar surfing, with enough punch to turn the banks on and the wind most likely to be blowing offshore.

Fair Surf Season (March and August - September)

March marks the beginning of the transition, with average period starting to climb and ideal wind improving to 34%. August and September still see plenty of powerful swell, especially in September where the average height peaks near 6ft (1.8m), but the return of the northeast trade wind increases cross-onshore conditions and shortens the quality windows. These months can fire when a strong post-frontal high sets in, but consistency is lower than the peak autumn-winter stretch.

Low Surf Season (October - February)

This is the summer tradewind regime at Praia dos Molhes. The South Atlantic High becomes dominant, locking in persistent ENE-E-NE winds that blow directly into the east-southeast-facing beach. Average wave periods drop to 8.2-8.6 seconds, offshore wind windows shrink to 21-32%, and the surf becomes smaller, more disorganized, and heavily influenced by short-period windswell. Beachbreaks still produce fun peaks, especially around dawn or after cold-front passages, but the overall consistency and quality drop significantly.
