Prainha seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (April - August)
The South Atlantic really comes alive during the southern autumn and winter, and Prainha feels every bit of it. As the ocean cools and the first strong frontal systems push north out of Argentina and Uruguay, the average swell size climbs to 1.6-1.8m (5-6ft) and the average wave period stretches to 9.1-9.8s. The onshore trade-wind flow weakens, while post-frontal west, west-northwest and northwest winds set up clean offshore conditions at this east-southeast facing beach. April, May, June, July and August are the prime months, with ideal wind frequencies peaking at 43-54 percent and some of the most consistent, lined-up east through south-southeast swell of the year.
Fair Surf Season (March and September)
March and September are transitional months at Prainha. March still has warm water and a rising swell, but the period is shorter and the NE/ENE trades still fight for control. September sees the biggest average swell heights of the year around 1.8m (6ft), but the return of the South Atlantic high brings stronger northeasterly winds that chop up the surface and drop the ideal wind frequency to only 29 percent. These months require a good forecast and a willingness to pick the windows of lighter west-northwest wind.
Low Surf Season (October - February)
Late spring and summer mark the low season in terms of surf quality at Prainha, even though waves rarely disappear completely. The average swell height remains a rideable 1.4-1.7m (4.5-5.5ft), but the average period drops to 8.2-8.6s and the east-northeast trade winds blow onshore for long stretches. Only 23-28 percent of the time is the wind truly ideal, so waves tend to be punchy, lumpy and wind-affected. The low season is all about chasing dawn windows, smaller tides and the occasional cold-front pulse that briefly brings offshore west-northwest winds.
