Best Surf Season (December - March)

Diego Garcia's most consistent surf window falls during the northern-hemisphere winter and early spring, when the monsoon trough shifts and the atoll sits on the fringes of the equatorial westerlies. During December, January, February and March, the ideal wind statistic climbs to 38-49 percent, driven by a much higher frequency of WSW-W-WNW flow. That is the closest the island comes to a clean offshore setup for this east-facing coastline. Average swell heights sit around 5-6ft (1.5-1.8m) with periods of 10.8-11.7s, so the waves are solid and powerful rather than oversized. While true NW-W-WSW swell remains a relatively small slice of the spectrum, the winter months do see more of that favourable westerly energy than any other period, especially in January and February. This is the season to pick your windows and search for a groomed, walled-up wave on the island's reefs.

Fair Surf Season (April & November)

April and November are transitional months, caught between the northeast and southwest monsoon regimes. Wind is favourable 28 percent of the time in April and 21 percent in November, and average heights are moderate at around 6ft (1.8m). The dominant swell is still from the S-SSE-SE quadrant, which is outside the island's optimal swell window, but the lighter winds and occasional westerly flow can line up with longer-period groundswell to produce workable surf. These months are worth watching for a few scoreable sessions, especially when a trough pushes the trades aside and the wind clock swings into the west.

Low Surf Season (May - October)

From May through October, the southeast trade winds become relentless as the Mascarene High pumps a strong ESE-SE flow across the central Indian Ocean. Ideal wind percentages collapse to single digits (1-9 percent) while average swell heights actually increase to 7-9ft (2.1-2.7m) with 11-12s periods. This is the classic southwest-monsoon regime, and although there is no shortage of raw southern-hemisphere groundswell, the direction is all wrong for Diego Garcia's preferred exposure. Nearly all of the energy arrives from SSE-S-SE, with essentially nothing from the preferred NW-WNW-W-WSW window. Long-period swell is often present, but blown-out, choppy conditions and wrong-direction swell make this the most challenging stretch of the year for quality surf at the atoll. May and October sit at the edges of this season and offer slightly better odds, but the core months of June through September are a real grind.
