September: Fall Stirrings and Better Chances

September signals the start of the real transition back to winter. Average wave height rises to 0.4m (1.3ft), average period strengthens to 3.3s, and while NNW still leads the wave rose (14.9%), the southwest quadrant becomes noticeably more active - SSW 7.5%, SW 7.3%, S 6.9% - reflecting the changing storm tracks and more variable wind fields. Waves from the favourable W/WNW/NW/NNW quadrant total about 40% of all energy, and the occurrence of 0.5-1m (1.5-3ft) waves increases, especially from the NW/NNW directions. It is nowhere close to firing, but the lake is starting to breathe.

Equally important, wind conditions become more balanced: onshore W/WNW/NW/NNW flow drops to 35%, while offshore E/ESE/SE/SSE winds reach 22.5% and ideal surfing windows rise to 3%. This is the first month since spring when a meaningful clean session is possible. Air temperature cools to 16.1°C, precipitation averages 2.26 mm/day, and water temps are still warm - 17-20°C (63-68°F). A good 2-3ft (0.6-1m) NW windswell groomed by an offshore E/ESE wind can actually be rideable in September, making it underrated.
