Best Surf Season (October - March)

The surf year at Santa Maria is a study in contradictions. The island sits far enough south to escape the worst of the mid-latitude gales, yet close enough to the North Atlantic storm track to feel the pulse of long-period winter groundswell. From October through March, average swell heights run 1.5-2.0m (5-7ft) and average periods push 10-11s, making for powerful, punchy waves. The catch is that the swell arrives almost exclusively from the NNE/NE quadrant - a poor angle for this SE-facing beach - while the ideal S/SW/SSW groundswell window is almost absent year-round. To make matters worse, the northeast trade winds blow hard and often, keeping the percentage of ideal offshore NW/NNW wind at just 7-19% during these months. Still, when a strong negative NAO pattern allows the jet to buckle south, low-pressure systems can fire northern-hemisphere swell toward Cape Verde with more NW component; if the wind then backs into the NNW/NW, Santa Maria can light up with heavy, long-period surf well overhead. That combination is the winter golden ticket.

Fair Surf Season (June - September)

As summer progresses, the swells shrink but the surface conditions improve dramatically. The Azores high migrates north, the trade wind belt weakens, and more frequent NW and N winds blow straight offshore across the SE-facing sand. From June to September, ideal wind statistics run 15-41%, with July and August offering the cleanest, calmest windows of the year. Average wave heights drop to 1.3-1.5m (4-5ft) and periods fall to 8-9s, so the waves are smaller, softer and more windswell-driven. This is a great season for beginners and longboarders - or for anyone happy to trade size for clean, fun, rippable lines under tropical sun.

Low Surf Season (April - May)

April and May are the true shoulder months. The winter swell machine is fading: average period drops from 10.8s in March to 8.4s by May, and average height slides from 1.9m (6ft) to 1.6m (5ft). The wind regime remains stubbornly locked in the NE trade pattern, with ideal offshore winds only 6-7% of the time - the lowest of the year. This combination of shrinking, shorter-period swell and persistent onshore/cross-shore wind leaves Santa Maria at its most frustrating. There are still rides to be had, especially on a fading north swell during a light NNW morning, but April and May demand low expectations and a good eye on the forecast.
