Best Surf Season (December - April)

Let's be honest from the start: Boca Barranca does not receive the kind of consistent, grinding surf that most west-facing Costa Rican spots are known for. The beach faces WNW into the Gulf of Nicoya, and the data show an almost permanent diet of small, long-period SSW and S swell that the point simply does not face. That said, the December through April dry season is the closest thing to a 'best' window. Rainfall plummets, the trade winds stabilise, and the average swell period climbs from 10.9s to 14.0s. Wave heights are still tiny-most days hover around 0.2-0.3m (0.7-1ft)-but occasional NE or W-sector pulses can nudge the 0.5-1m (1.6-3.3ft) range. If you're looking for the most pleasant combination of clean, offshore easterly mornings and at least a ripple of long-period energy, this is your season.

Fair Surf Season (May - August)

May through August marks the first half of the rainy season. The dominant swell stays locked in from SSW, with average heights still stuck at 0.3m (1ft), but the positive here is a longer average period-often reaching 14.5s-and a greater share of offshore E/ESE/SE winds. Those winds won't create surf on their own, but they will keep the surface cleaner during tropical showers. Rain becomes a daily feature (4-5.4 mm/day), and water temps are at their warmest near 29.3-29.7°C. This is a fair season for a patient surfer with a longboard: more glassy windows, same minimal waves.

Low Surf Season (September - November)

The September through November stretch is the least appealing combination of the year. Rainfall peaks-September and October average over 7 mm/day-while the swell direction remains dominated by SSW (71-77%) and the favourable W/WNW/NW/WSW sectors account for only 1.5-2.1% of all observations. Onshore westerly winds also become more frequent, spoiling the surface on the rare occasions when any energy is present. Although October actually shows the highest percentage of offshore E/ESE/SE wind, the wave heights are too small to matter. If you visit during these months, bring a book, a foil board, or extremely low expectations.
