January: The Dry Season Gold Standard

The new year brings Playa Dominical its most reliable surf conditions of the entire calendar. The average swell is a clean 3ft (1.0m) with a 12.8s period, and the wind is ideal 42% of the time - the highest mark of the year. Swell direction is overwhelmingly from the SSW (70%) with the rest from the SW (28%), both of which hit the SSW-facing beach with full energy. The wave-height distribution is friendly: roughly two-thirds of the waves break in the 2-3ft (0.5-1m) range and one-third in the 3-5ft (1-1.5m) range, making this a superb month for logging mileage on a groveler or a shortboard.

Meteorologically, the strengthening subtropical high and associated northeast trade winds keep the dry season locked in, and the dominant N/NNE offshore flow polishes the swell into clean walls. That said, the wind rose still shows a substantial SW/WSW onshore component, so the 42% ideal figure means you need to pick your moments - mornings are your friend. With water temperature of 28.4°C (83°F), air temps around 20.6°C (69°F) and only 2.59mm/day of rain, January is hard to beat.
