Best Surf Season (December - April)

Playa Escondida is a west-facing pocket on Costa Rica's Pacific coast, and its surf is driven by the seasonal migration of the ITCZ and the strength of the South Pacific storm track. The cleanest and most consistent window runs from December through April, when the dry season keeps rainfall low and winds light. Average swell heights sit near 3-4ft (0.9-1.2m), periods climb from 12.3s to 14.0s, and the clean-wind percentage peaks at 43-46%. The data shows an almost complete absence of pure NW-W-WNW swell; instead, long-period SSW/SW groundswell dominates year-round. It is not the ideal swell angle for a west-facing beach, but the long periods and mostly light winds make it very rideable.

Fair Surf Season (May - August)

As the Southern Hemisphere winter cranks up, the South Pacific produces more vigorous SSW/SW swell. Average heights build to 4-4.5ft (1.2-1.4m), with a growing share of 5-6.5ft (1.5-2m) sets, especially in June and August. Periods remain in the powerful 13-14s range. The trade-off is the onset of the rainy season: precipitation jumps to 7-8mm per day, cloud cover increases, and the ideal-wind percentage drops to 39-43%. Plenty of surfable days remain, but you have to pick the windows where the wind comes around from the SSW/SW side.

Low Surf Season (September - November)

September through November is the least reliable stretch for clean conditions, even though average swell size stays around 4ft (1.2-1.4m) into October. This is the heart of the wet season, with September and October seeing the lowest clean-wind percentages of the year at 35% and 38%, along with peak rainfall. Swell quality is often mixed with local windswell and tropical instability waves, and the wind field becomes more spread through the WSW-W-NW quadrant, which can chop up the surface at the west-facing beach. November begins the transition back toward drier trades and better texture.
