Best Surf Season (April - August)

When the Pacific storm track south of the equator fires up, Playa Guiones transforms into one of Central America's most consistent surf spots. The dominant swell energy locks into a tight SSW/SW corridor-during April and May a staggering 80-95% of all waves arrive from SSW/SW-and average periods climb to 13-14s. That means almost every set carries real power and lines wrap cleanly onto the west-southwest-facing sand. Early-morning offshore E/NE flow and lighter variable winds, especially in July with 68% ideal conditions, keep the beachbreak rippable between passing green-season showers. This is the window for solid 4-6ft (1.2-1.8m) surf, with plenty of 5-8ft (1.5-2.4m) stand-out days on the horizon.

Fair Surf Season (March, September - November)

These are the transition months, and timing becomes everything. In March, the SSW energy is building quickly and periods reach 13.2s, but the NE trades are still fighting the spring transition and ideal wind drops to 40%. September and October, by contrast, have enormous SSW/SW energy-often 98% of the swell mix-yet the trade-wind lid is gone; frequent S/SW and WSW onshore breezes and tropical convection can flatten and blow out the surface. November brings cleaner trade-wind glass and plenty of 12.5s SSW/SW swell, but the energy is beginning to fade. When the weather windows align, these months can still produce excellent waves, but they are less reliable than the core season.

Low Surf Season (December - February)

December through February is the cleanest, driest and most user-friendly period weather-wise, but the surf gets less consistent. The subtropical high pumps strong NE/ENE offshore trades, ideal wind is 40-60%, and rainfall is almost non-existent. However, the northern-hemisphere winter storm track sends more mixed NW/NNE windswell and groundswell, the average period falls to 11.5-12.3s, and the percentage of swell from the optimal SSW/SW/WSW/W quadrant drops to 48-61%. Expect fun, rippable 4-5ft (1.2-1.5m) waves with occasional stand-out days, but not the sustained power and consistency of the green-season southern-hemisphere swells.
