Spot Overview & Description

Swell Height3 - 10 ft
SeabedUneven Reef, Sand
Skill LevelIntermediate
Best TideLow, Mid, High

Tucked about a mile south of downtown Tamarindo, Langosta delivers a versatile beachbreak with a wide rivermouth that consistently pumps out rideable surf. While the main peak can get a little testy when conditions align, the crowd factor here tends to be more manageable than the zoo at Tamarindo proper or Playa Grande. That said, the local lineup has its moments of intensity—especially when the ocean turns on. The waves at Langosta are steep, shifty, and best suited for intermediate surfers looking to dial in their carves and rebounds. Swell from the Southwest and Northwest lights it up, handling waist-high to double-overhead (1.5 to 3 meters). Most of the quality action funnels along the rivermouth, where a shifting bottom of reef and sand produces both lefts and rights. The magic happens around mid to low tide, with easterly winds grooming the faces. Year-round surf is possible, but the biggest pulses roll through from March through September. Access is a bit of a hassle—there's a tiny public lot with maybe 10 spaces about 200 meters from the break. If you're not staying within walking distance, a taxi is your best bet. Expect a mix of locals and expats in the water, and while the overall vibe is fun, be ready for a solid crowd during peak swell windows. For those craving a different flavor than Tamarindo, Langosta delivers a worthy alternative.

Best Surf Season & Climatology

Best Surf Season (November - April)

Playa Langosta is at its absolute finest when the dry season takes hold from November through April. As the Aleutian Low spins up across the North Pacific, a steady stream of extratropical storms sends WNW and NW swell racing down the coast of Central America. At the same time, the strengthened pressure gradient between the North American high and the equatorial heat low locks in the NE trade winds, delivering offshore breezes that groom the west-facing sandbars for long, clean sessions. With average wave heights of 1.3m (4.3ft) and periods ranging from 11.5s to 14.1s, the spot gets a consistent diet of powerful, rippable surf. The winter months also bring the driest weather of the year, with sunny skies, warm air temps around 27-29°C, and water temps holding in the comfortable upper-20s range.
