Best Surf Season (November - April)

The northeast trade winds are the lifeblood of Playa Negra. From November through April, the eastern Pacific high pressure strengthens and drives a relentless NE/ENE offshore flow that grooms the surf. Swell from the southern hemisphere and north Pacific mixes in, but the SSW/SW component becomes more dominant with each passing month. Average wave heights hold around 4-5ft (1.3-1.5m) and periods range from 11.5 to 14.1s, which places the break firmly in the powerful, long-period category. November and December deliver the highest ideal wind percentages of the year at 75%, while March and April bring the most focused SSW/SW swell direction and the longest swell periods. This is the most consistent and user-friendly stretch of the year at Playa Negra.

Fair Surf Season (May - August)

As the Intertropical Convergence Zone drifts north, the northern trade winds lose some of their bite. May through August still serve up a steady diet of SSW and SW ground swell - the optimal window for the southwest-facing beach - with average wave heights ticking up to 5ft (1.5m) and periods holding around 13-14s. The catch is lighter and more variable wind. The ideal surfing wind percentage drops to the 56-77% range, and the increasingly humid, tropical air mass can produce afternoon sea breezes that bump the surface. July stands out as a return to cleaner trade-wind conditions with an ideal wind score of 77%. Overall, it is a fair season: consistent, warm, and fully surfable, but not as polished as the dry season.

Low Surf Season (September - October)

September and October are the most challenging months for wave quality at Playa Negra, even though the swell direction window is nearly perfect. The southern hemisphere still sends long-period SSW/SW swell across the equator, averaging 5ft (1.5m), but the wind consistency falls apart. September sees the ideal surfing wind drop to just 48%, the lowest of the year, while onshore flow from SSW, SW, WSW and W becomes much more common. Heavy tropical rainfall and high humidity add to the mess. If a strong storm track aligns, October can still produce powerful SW ground swell with clean windows, but these are the months where surfers need patience and a sharp eye on the local wind forecast.
