Best Surf Season (May - August)

This is the heart of the surf year at Playa Pelada. As the Southern Hemisphere storm track fires up, long-period SSW and SW groundswells march straight into the beach's west-southwest exposure. Average surf height climbs to 1.5m (5ft), periods hold in the 13-14s range, and the wind data lines up beautifully: ideal offshore flow is measured 48-67% of the time, with July being the most reliable. Rain and tropical showers are common during the green season, but the money windows come in the morning when light offshore ENE/NE winds groom the face and the SSW/SW swell lines stand up cleanly.

Fair Surf Season (March - April & September - November)

The shoulder seasons still deliver plenty of quality. March and April see the swell window narrow dramatically onto SSW/SW - April pushes over 90% of all wave energy from those directions - and periods can reach 14s. However, heights hold around 1.3m (4.3ft) and the trade winds become less consistent. September through November is the opposite: the size remains 1.5m (5ft) and the SSW/SW window is loaded, but the ITCZ overhead brings more rain and variable/onshore winds, especially in September and October. Pick the windows and it is still very good.

Low Surf Season (December - February)

The dry season is the quietest stretch for wave size. Average heights drop to 1.3m (4.3ft), periods shorten to 11.5-12.3s, and the swell rose becomes more spread across easterly, northerly, and northwesterly directions rather than focusing on the SSW/SW window. The compensation is the classic Costa Rican offshore trade wind regime: NE/ENE winds blow clean and cross-offshore a large percentage of the time, keeping the beach tidy and rippable even when the swell is smaller. It is the least consistent season in terms of power, but the lineup can be glassy, warm, and still fun.
