Best Surf Season (December - March)

Playa Valor is not a spot that pumps, but along this southwest-facing stretch of Costa Rica, the best chance for surfable waves comes during the dry season. From December through March, the intertropical convergence zone shifts south and the northeast trade winds strengthen, delivering the highest percentage of offshore conditions from the NNE/NE/ENE/E window. Rainfall drops to almost nothing, water temperatures hover around 28-29°C (82-84°F), and average swell periods build from 10.9s in January to 12.9s in March. The dominant southwest swell remains mostly tiny - average heights sit in the 0.5-1ft (0.2-0.3m) range - but the surface is far cleaner, and the occasional 1.5-3ft (0.5-1m) pulse can actually produce a shape worth surfing.

Fair Surf Season (April and November)

The shoulder months represent transition windows. April still holds the tail end of dry-season stability with a noticeably longer average period of 14.0s, while November sees the return of the northeast trades after the wettest months and a drop in daily rainfall. In both months, the beach is caught between regimes: offshore winds occur less often than in peak dry season, onshore flows remain common, and the southwest swell stays very small. These months offer the best compromise for someone who wants slightly cleaner conditions than the wet season but is willing to chase a rare, clean long-period micro-swell.

Low Surf Season (May - October)

From May through October, the wet season grips Costa Rica's Pacific coast. The northeast trades fade - offshore wind frequencies drop to single digits - while onshore winds from the southwest quadrant blow 33-36% of the time. Rainfall peaks between September and October with 7.4-7.6mm/day, which increases runoff and often ruins an already small swell window. Interestingly, this is when average wave periods are longest at 14.0-14.5s, a sign of distant Southern Hemisphere storm energy reaching the coast, but the wave heights remain locked in the 1ft (0.3m) zone. In short, this is a season for longboards and patience, not performance surfing.
