Best Surf Season (December - January)

At Gilleleje Havn, surfers learn to measure success in small, punchy windows rather than overhead days. The cold-season months of December and January form the most promising window of the year, with average swell heights reaching about 2ft (0.6m) and average periods climbing to 4.1-4.2s. That does not sound like much, and in truth it is mostly short-period windswell generated by the mid-latitude lows rolling across the North Atlantic and the Norwegian Sea. But compared with the rest of the year, these months offer the highest percentage of usable N-NNE-NE-NNW swell and the strongest likelihood of seeing an offshore S/SSE/SSW/SW wind align with a small pulse. The water is brutally cold, hovering around 3-5°C, yet for the dedicated crew this is the closest the harbour gets to a genuine surf season.
