Best Surf Season (November - March)

The North Atlantic roars to life during the late fall and winter months, and Destroyers on the DR's north coast feels every pulse. Between November and March, average swell heights climb to 5ft (1.5-1.6m) with periods holding around 9.3-9.4s. The wave rose shows an increasing share of N, NNE, NE and NNW energy - the directions that actually light up this north-facing beach - while the E/ESE trade-wind swell, though still present, is supplemented by more powerful northern groundswell. These are the months when mid-period and occasional long-period groundswell wrap into the beach, and despite the persistent trades, the window for clean, offshore SSW/SW mornings is worth waiting for. When the North Atlantic Oscillation tilts negative, the Azores High weakens and lows track farther south, adding even more north swell to the DR coast.

Fair Surf Season (April and October)

The shoulder months are transitions. October sees the first serious winter groundswell trains from the NE with periods climbing toward 9s, while the water is still warm and the winds are less aggressive. April still produces a decent NE/ENE mix, but average heights ease to 4ft (1.3m), period drops to 8.9s, and the surf becomes more dependent on daily wind. These months can deliver fun, rippable waves when the wind clock goes light or offshore, but they lack the consistent power of the core winter season.

Low Surf Season (May - September)

Summer is the slow season for Destroyers. From May through September, the North Atlantic storm track shifts north and the Caribbean becomes dominated by E/ESE trade wind swell. Average heights fall to 3.5-4ft (1.1-1.2m) and periods drop to 7.2-8.8s. The energy is mostly east and cross-shore, so it does not groom properly on this north-facing exposure, leaving a lumpy, short-period mess for much of the time. September is the pick of the low season because hurricane season and the first north swells begin to inject slightly more period and energy, but summer is primarily a small, windswell-driven period for the patient.
