El Barco is a north-northwest-facing sandbar on the Dominican Republic's north coast, which makes it one of the most direction-sensitive spots in the Caribbean. The whole surf year is a battle between the easterly trade wind regime and true north swell from the Atlantic storm track. When the north in the swell increases and the wind tips into the offshore southerly quadrants, El Barco turns on. When the easterly trades lock in, the waves turn small, short and cross-shore.

Best Surf Season (December - March)

The most reliable surf of the year arrives in winter. The North Atlantic storm track becomes active, and cold fronts diving southeast off the US East Coast inject N, NNE and NNW swell into the northern Caribbean. Average wave heights sit at 1.6-1.7m (5-6ft) with periods around 9.3-9.5s, and occasional pulses push into the powerful 10-14s range. During negative NAO phases, the storm track can dip far enough south to send clean N/NW groundswell straight at El Barco. The trades still blow a lot of the time, but when the wind relaxes or shifts into the S/SW offshore quadrant, this is some of the best surf of the year.
