Best Surf Season (October - March)
The winter half of the year is when La Boya's trade wind machine finally starts cooperating. Cold fronts dip deeper into the Atlantic and the Bahamas, weakening the Bermuda-Azores High just enough for the wind to swing offshore for meaningful windows. The swell distribution tilts more toward the NE/ENE side of the compass, while average heights sit in the 3.5ft (1.1m) range-small but consistently fun. Ideal offshore wind percentages jump to 10-17%, with the best windows in October and November. When the NAO backs off and the trades ease, days of clean, glassy 3-5ft (1-1.5m) surf become real.
Fair Surf Season (April - May, September)
The shoulder months are a game of percentages. April and May still have plenty of ESE/E swell, but the SE component grows and the ideal wind frequency slips to 8-10%. September is the hidden gem: wave heights are on the small side at 2.5-3ft (0.8-0.9m), but the transition to fall brings more S/SW offshore flows (14% ideal wind) and a handful of clean days from tropical waves. It's not firing every day, but the number of rideable windows is enough to make the drive worth it.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is the heart of the doldrums for La Boya. The trades are locked in from the ESE/SE quadrant and blow almost constantly onshore, with ideal surfable wind collapsing to just 3-6%. The wave height averages around 3.5ft (1.1m), but it's often lumpy, sectiony, and hard to read. Water temperatures are at their warmest-28.4-28.9°C (83-85°F)-and afternoon convection is common. The exception is tropical cyclone season: a well-placed hurricane or easterly wave can override the local junk and send clean, long-period groundswell into the break, but those are short-lived anomalies rather than a reliable summer pattern.
