Best Surf Season (October - March)
The North Atlantic roars to life in October, and for Playa Grande that is the beginning of the most reliable surfing window of the year. As low-pressure systems deepen off the United States East Coast and the Azores High begins to sink, long-period NE and NNE swell becomes increasingly common. Average heights run from 4-5ft (1.2-1.5m) in October to a 5-6ft (1.5-1.8m) peak from December through February, with average periods of 9-9.5s. When the North Atlantic Oscillation index is negative, the mid-latitude storm track dips farther south and these pulses align even better with a north-facing beach like Playa Grande. The main challenge is wind: midwinter E/ESE trade winds blow 20-30kph (12-19mph) a large percentage of the time, so the best surf is tied to cold-front passages and dawn glass. Still, size and power are at their annual maximum, and the N/NE groundswell windows make it worth the patience.
Fair Surf Season (April - May)
By April the powerful winter groundswells begin to fade. Average heights ease to 4-5ft (1.2-1.5m) and periods drop below 9s, while the dominant swell direction shifts increasingly east. The compensation is wind: trade-wind intensity relaxes and the percentage of ideal offshore south flow climbs from 32 percent in April to 44 percent in May. You can find clean, rippable waves more often, but you will be working for them on a groveler. This shoulder season is best for surfers who value manageable shape over raw North Atlantic power.
Low Surf Season (June - September)
Summer in the tropical Atlantic is dominated by easterly trade winds and weak local fetch. From June to August, 68-87 percent of the swell at Playa Grande arrives from straight east with average periods of 7.3-7.5s - a recipe for small, fat, low-energy surf on a north-facing beach. Wind is actually cleaner, especially in September, but the waves are too small and poorly angled. September is the standout of the low season: tropical waves and early Atlantic storms can add 8-9s energy, and the ideal offshore wind percentage jumps to 58 percent, giving the first real taste of the coming season.
