Preciosa seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (December - March)
The heart of winter is when Preciosa reaches its ceiling. As the North Atlantic storm track roars to life, extratropical cyclones marching off the U.S. East Coast and low pressure systems deepening near the Bahamas send a steady pulse of N, NNE and NE groundswell toward the Dominican coastline. Average swell heights run 1.6-1.7m (5.2-5.6ft) and average periods sit in the 9.4-9.5s range, delivering punchy, powerful, rideable surf for the north-northeast-facing beach. When the North Atlantic Oscillation slips negative, the storm track can shift south and increase the odds of N/NNW swell - exactly what this spot loves. The catch is the wind: E/ESE trades dominate, so you need the S/SSW/SW offshore windows, often at dawn, to unlock the best waves.
Fair Surf Season (April - May and October - November)
The shoulder seasons are a trade-off. In April and May, the Atlantic settles down and average swell heights fade to 1.3-1.4m (4.3-4.6ft) with shorter 8.2-8.9s periods, but the wind tends to be lighter and cleaner at times, especially in May. October and November are the stronger side of fair: North Atlantic storms begin to spin up again, pushing the average period back above 9s and returning NE/NNE energy to the mix. November in particular can show 1.6m (5.2ft) swells, although the trade winds and passing rain systems reduce the number of perfect days.
Low Surf Season (June - September)
Summer is the trade-wind lull. From June through September, the swell direction becomes stubbornly easterly, with E, ENE and NE accounting for most of the wave energy, and average periods drop to 7.3-8.8s. That means smaller, softer and more disorganized surf at Preciosa. June, July and August are the slowest, but September begins to stir as hurricane season peaks and the trade winds ease, lifting the ideal wind window to around 50 percent. Hurricane swells can also interrupt the lull with rare, powerful pulses - but they are hit-or-miss, so keep expectations low and the travel plans flexible.
