Best Surf Season (November - March)

The dry-season months of November through March are Punta Roca's bread and butter. Strong high-pressure systems over the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean funnel cool offshore flow through the Central American mountain gaps, giving the coast a reliable N/NNE and NNW breeze. That offshore cleaning flow is the secret at Punta Roca: it keeps the south-facing point walling up and hollow, even when average swell heights are only around 3-4ft (1.0-1.2m). The swell window is almost exclusively S/SSW/SW, with SSW accounting for the vast majority of the energy, and periods of 12-13s keep the waves lined-up and powerful.

Fair Surf Season (April - July)

As the ITCZ drifts north, the rainy season arrives and the wind regime becomes more erratic. April and May see the lowest perfect-wind percentages of the year as afternoon S/SW sea breezes attack the surf. In exchange, the Southern Hemisphere winter storm track fires up, delivering the largest average swell heights of the year - around 4.5ft (1.4m) with 13.8-14.2s periods. For the dedicated surfer, early-morning sessions before the onshore wind kicks in can be world-class, especially during peak SSW groundswell events.

Low Surf Season (August - October)

Late summer and early fall is a weather grab bag. The swell never disappears - tropical cyclones and easterly waves keep heights around 4-5ft (1.3-1.4m) - but the wind is less consistent, rain is heaviest, and periods drop back to around 13s. Punta Roca can still fire when a solid SSW/SW pulse coincides with a northerly gap flow or a storm offshore cleans up the breeze, but the overall reliability is lower than in the winter dry season.
