Sunzal seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (May - September)
The southern hemisphere storm track switches into full gear during May, sending consistent SSW groundswell to Sunzal through September. Average wave heights climb to 4-5ft (1.3-1.4m) and periods hover in the 13-14s zone, with a large majority of the energy arriving from the optimal SSW/S sector. The downside is the Central American wet season-rainfall peaks between June and September and afternoon sea breezes can put a chop on the surface. Early mornings are the window, when the offshore N/NNE flow and cleaned-up swell combine for the most rippable conditions of the year.
Fair Surf Season (October - November and March - April)
These transition months offer a trade-off. October hangs onto the tail of the southern swell window with 4-5ft (1.3m) average height and 13s period, while March and April see the last big pulses of SSW energy before summer and some of the longest average periods (up to 14.1s in April). Winds are more mixed than mid-summer, with ideal conditions 52-60% of the time, but the rain begins to ease in October and the water stays warm in the upper 20s.
Low Surf Season (December - February)
The relative low season is all about quality over quantity. Average swell heights dip to 3-4ft (1.0m) and the period backs off to 12.1-12.8s, but the dry season delivers the cleanest air-offshore N/NNE winds blow 61-70% of the time. Sunzal still sees rideable long-period SSW swell, just with less size and more glassy, user-friendly waves. If you are chasing the biggest surf, this is not the time; if you want a clean, uncrowded morning, it is hard to beat.
