Best Surf Season (November - March)
The Mediterranean winter is the most reliable time to surf Canet Plage. The average swell height sits around 1.3m (4ft) with the highest percentage of ideal offshore winds from the west-northwest to northwest. The interplay between Atlantic lows pushing through the Gulf of Lions and the local Tramontane wind regime generates consistent short-period surf that, although not giant, offers the most rideable waves south of the Pyrenees. Expect punchy, wave-for-wedge peaks and a much higher chance of clean, groomed conditions.
Fair Surf Season (April & October)
During the shoulder months, the balance between summer flatness and winter energy tilts. April and October both see average swell heights of 1.0-1.1m (3-4ft) with ideal offshore wind percentages near 25-28%. The surf is smaller and more inconsistent, but occasional long-period European swell events can light up the beach. These months require more patience and a keen eye on the charts, yet they often deliver the best combination of clean lines, light winds, and still-moderate water temperature.
Low Surf Season (May - September)
Late spring through early autumn is dominated by high pressure and flat, small conditions. Average heights drop to 0.7-0.8m (2-3ft) and wave periods slide into the 4-5 second range, making for mostly weak, short-period closeouts. The persistent north/northwesterly winds remain, but there is simply less energy in the water. Only the occasional 'Marin' storm from the east or southeast can produce fun-sized, groveling waves - if the wind cooperates. For serious surfers, this is the season to chase summer groundswells elsewhere, or to enjoy longboard days on the micro waves.
