Lafitenia seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (October - March)
The North Atlantic storm track ramps up through autumn and winter, and Lafitenia sits directly in the firing line. From October through March, the average swell height hovers between 1.3m and 1.8m (4-6ft), while average periods push into the 11-13s range. The dominant WNW and NW swells hit this northwest-facing beach almost head-on, producing powerful, well-organized lines. Offshore wind stats peak in this window, with ideal wind conditions showing up 35-38% of the time, as Atlantic lows pull in southerly and south-southwesterly breezes. This is the heart of the season.
Fair Surf Season (April - May and September)
These shoulder months offer a blend of fading winter and emerging summer patterns. April and May still see a high percentage of NW and WNW swell, but average size drops to 1.0-1.2m (3-4ft) and periods shrink to 10-11s. September is the inverse: the ocean starts waking up, with average swell climbing back above 1.1m (3-4ft) and periods reaching 10.6s. Ideal wind scores sit between 21-27%, so clean days exist but require more patience and careful timing around the wind shifts.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer in the Bay of Biscay is dominated by the Azores High. Lafitenia is still exposed to NW windswell, and there is almost always something to ride, but the overwhelming majority of swell falls in the 0.9m (3ft) and 9.0-9.4s range. Ideal wind frequency drops to 14-18%, while afternoon thermal sea breezes out of the NNW tend to chop up the surface. There are still glassy dawn patrol sessions and occasional fun longboard waves, but true Lafitenia power is rare until the autumn equinox.
