Perched at the edge of a raw, rocky headland, La Torche stands as a seminal figure in Brittany's surf lore. The main attraction is an ultra-consistent, walled-up peak peeling over a sand-and-rock bottom—a long, sweeping left that unfurls for a considerable ride down the beach. On the other side of the peak, shorter, punchier rights pitch into a hollow, fast-breaking section before fading into the notorious rip known as "the elevator"—a current that demands respect and savvy navigation. For those seeking variety, additional peaks scatter northward along the strand at Tronoën and Penhors, offering more forgiving lines. Meanwhile, the La Torche point itself, tucked at the southern end of Audierne Bay, serves up mellower, user-friendly rights that suit craft of all shapes. This is a spot that rewards timing, tide awareness, and a willingness to read the shifting banks.

Best Surf Season & Climatology

Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic roars to life during the autumn and winter months, and La Torche, with its full west-facing exposure, is perfectly positioned to catch the best of it. From October through March, average swell heights sit in the 6-7ft (1.8-2.2m) range with periods mostly between 10 and 12 seconds. The wave rose is dominated by the ideal W, WNW, WSW and NW windows, as extratropical cyclones tracking across the Atlantic send long-period groundswell straight into the beach. The main problem is wind: the same storm tracks that create the swell also favor onshore SW through NW flow. The magic arrives when a high-pressure system builds over central Europe and pulls the wind into the NE through SE quadrant, grooming those powerful W/NW lines into clean, hollow peaks. Those are the days that make La Torche world-class.
