St. Laurent du Var seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (November - March)

If you are chasing surf at St. Laurent du Var, the window from November through March is your best bet. The Mediterranean becomes more active as low-pressure systems spin up over the Gulf of Genoa and push short-period swell into the Côte d'Azur. Average wave heights climb to around 2ft (0.6m) and periods stretch to 5.4-5.7s, which is still on the short side but markedly better than summer. Crucially, offshore N/NNE/NE flow under Mistral-type pressure gradients blows 31-36 percent of the time, keeping the southwest-facing beach cleaner. It is a small-wave, grovel-friendly season; the occasional 3-5ft (1-1.5m) swell can light up the beach.

Fair Surf Season (October & April)

October and April are transitional months. The average swell remains around 2ft (0.5-0.6m), and periods hover near 5.1s. October sees the return of synoptic storms, while April still produces a reasonable amount of S/SW swell direction but with less energy. Clean offshore winds occur about 25-28 percent of the time, so there are rideable sessions between flat spells. If you score a N/NE morning with a fresh SW swell pulse, it can be fun, though consistency is lacking.

Low Surf Season (May - September)

From May through September, the Mediterranean settles into a summer pattern. High pressure, thermal onshore winds and tiny wave periods (4.1-4.7s) dominate. Average swell heights drop to 1-1.3ft (0.3-0.4m), with more than half of the observations falling into the micro (<0.5m) category. The S/SSW/SW directions are actually frequent, but they are mostly short-period windswell with no power. Ideal offshore wind occurs only 7-16 percent of the time, and light S/SSW sea breezes frequently ruin what little texture exists. Expect flat, blown-out conditions; bring a skimboard or do something else.
