Best Surf Season (November - March)
Apollonas doesn't light up like a typical Atlantic reef - it's a microtidal, NE-facing Cycladic corner that needs a very specific combination of raw north energy and offshore southern air. The best months are November through March, when Mediterranean cyclone tracks are most active and the N to NE fetches deliver their largest average swells of the year. January and February peak with average heights near 1.3m (4.3ft) and average periods at 5.5s - still short-period windswell by global standards, but the most powerful and consistent the spot sees. Offshore S/SW wind windows occur roughly 27-30 percent of the time, so the NE-facing beach can occasionally groom the storm lumps into fun 3-5ft (0.9-1.5m) walls. A negative NAO phase often favors stormier periods in the eastern Med, making winter the time to watch the charts carefully.
Fair Surf Season (April - May and September - October)
The transition months offer a mixed bag. April and May see average heights drop to 0.7-0.9m (2.3-3ft) and periods slump to 4.5-4.8s, producing mushy, small conditions. Still, there are more clean S/SW wind days in April, and the lighter spring winds can make the small surf more user-friendly on a groveler or longboard. September and October bring a slow reawakening as N and NNW swell percentages climb again; October in particular shows a healthy N swell spread, but the onshore N/NNE wind still limits quality. If the wind switches offshore, fair-to-good peaks appear, but you need luck on the wind or the wave quality quickly suffers.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is dominated by the Aegean meltemi. NNW winds blow relentlessly - 70.7 percent in July and 71.5 percent in August - and the swell is almost entirely short-period, locally windblown NNW chop. At Apollonas that means cross-to-onshore, messy 2-3ft (0.6-0.9m) lumps and only 2-4 percent of time with ideal wind. The water is warm and the beach is beautiful, but consistent quality surf is hard to find. When the meltemi finally backs off, you might score a rare glassy afternoon, but summer is not a reliable surf season.
