Kastro Point seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (December - February)
Kastro Point is a Mediterranean gem that relies on the winter storm track to do its heavy lifting. From December through February, average swell heights climb to 0.7-0.8m (2.3-2.6ft), periods hover near the 6s mark, and the north/northeast offshore wind window is at its annual strongest - with ideal conditions about 26-28% of the time. This is when south/southeast and south/southwest swells can actually hit the beach with enough energy to break in clean lines. It is not Hawaii, but for Greece it is the most consistent surf of the year. The key is a Mediterranean low stalled to the south or southwest of the region, feeding cross-sea energy into the SSE-facing beach. A negative NAO phase can help push upper-level energy into the Mediterranean, while a positive phase tends to keep the big lows bottled up in the Atlantic. A 4/3 or 5/4 wetsuit is part of the deal, especially with water temperatures falling to 14.8-15.7°C and cold continental air drops below -10°C.
Fair Surf Season (March - April & October - November)
Spring and autumn are transition seasons. March and April still see a decent share of southern swell - around 25-27% of the energy comes from the favorable SE/SSE/S/SSW quadrant - but wave heights and periods are dropping. The ocean is still active enough for occasional fun-sized 2-3ft (0.6-0.9m) sessions between cold fronts, especially when NW offshore winds groom the surface. Autumn is the more promising shoulder: October and November see Mediterranean cyclones firing up again, and November in particular delivers the highest percentage of favorable south-quadrant swell of the year at 35%. However, periods are still short and winds are not as reliably offshore as midwinter. If you catch a strong low-pressure system, Kastro can be surprisingly good; the rest of the time it remains a clean-ish but small windswell spot.
Low Surf Season (May - September)
Summer is the flat season. The Mediterranean high-pressure ridge sets up, the storm track retreats north, and average swell heights slump to 0.4m (1.3ft). The Etesian/meltemi winds blow from the north with regularity, which sounds good in theory, but without swell the offshore wind just texture-flattens an already tiny sea. Wave periods drop to 4.1-4.6s, producing choppy micro-slop. Water temperatures rise to a balmy 24.8°C in August, making it lovely for swimming, but a surfer will mostly be groveling on a foam board or waiting for a rare thunderstorm outflow to produce a few rideable closeouts. May and September are the least bad summer months, but neither is worth planning a surf trip around.
