Kolibithra seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (October - March)
Kolibithra faces nearly due north, making it an arrow for the short, punchy North Aegean sea-state. The winter half of the year is the clear winner. From October through March, passing Mediterranean cyclones and upper-level troughs send recurring N, NNE and NNW swell through the Aegean. Average wave heights climb to 1.0-1.3m (3-4ft) with average periods of 4.9-5.4s, and the chance of solid 5-7ft (1.5-2.0m) sets is at its annual peak. The catch? The local wind regime is dominated by N/NNW winds, so onshore conditions are frequent. The best sessions happen when a low pressure system sits to the southeast and pulls offshore S to SW winds into the bay, grooming that north swell into clean, rideable waves. Water temps hover around 15-17°C and air temps average 12-14°C, so a good spring suit or steamer is wise.
Fair Surf Season (April and September)
April and September are transitional months. The ocean is either shedding energy from the winter storm track or just beginning to wake from the summer doldrums. Swell heights average 0.8-0.9m (2.5-3ft) with short periods of 4.7s, mostly windswell from the N and NNW directions. On the positive side, the water is beautifully warm, ranging from 16°C in April to 24.5°C in September, and the etesian winds are not yet locked in at full strength. You can find clean, surfable days at Kolibithra, especially when the north wind relaxes overnight and a S to SW offshore flow sets up by dawn, but do not expect large, powerful swell.
Low Surf Season (May - August)
Summer is the classic Mediterranean lull. The etesian, or meltemi, wind machine cranks up from May onward, blowing from the N and NNW 40-72 percent of the time. That is directly onshore at Kolibithra, so those summer N/NNW pulses are almost always chopped into junky, bumpy conditions. Average wave heights sit at 0.7-1.0m (2-3ft) with periods of 4.3-4.8s, which means a lot of soft, sectiony summer mush. True offshore wind windows from S-SSW-SW are rare, only 1-4 percent of the time. When they do align with a pulse of north windswell, the beach can produce a fun few hours, but the season as a whole is about small waves and small expectations.
