Ligia seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (October - March)

Ligia is a classic west-southwest facing Mediterranean beach that depends entirely on the Ionian Sea's winter storm track for any real surf. The best season runs from October through March, when low-pressure systems moving across the central and eastern Mediterranean throw long-fetch SW, WSW and W swell toward the beach. During this window, average wave heights reach around 2-3ft (0.6-0.9m) and periods climb toward 5.9s, while offshore NNE, NE, ENE and E winds are far more common, especially in December and January, the peak months. It will never be huge, but this is by far the most consistent and cleanest time to surf Ligia.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

April and September are shoulder months where the Mediterranean storm machine is sputtering to life or shutting down. Average heights drop to around 1.5-2ft (0.5-0.6m) and periods fall to 4.5-5.2s, while ideal wind percentages sit in the low to mid-teens. Swell direction can still be favorable from the WSW/SW quadrant, especially in April, but the lack of size and period keeps the surf small and grovelly. These months can still offer quiet, clean sessions if an early or late-season low aligns with an offshore wind.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

May through August is the flat season. The average wave height bottoms out at around 1-1.5ft (0.3-0.5m), average periods drop to 4.1-4.6s, and ideal winds are only present 7-10% of the time. The swell rose is dominated by WNW and NW directions that are poorly exposed at Ligia, and the summer wind regime is frequently onshore from the W and WNW. Add afternoon sea breezes and the Etesian influence, and you get bumpy, micro surf. It is a beautiful time for swimming, but surfers should leave the high-performance board at home.
